Although many of the cities traditional landmarks and buildings were destroyed during the modernist era, there are certain areas that managed to survive. These locations still offer blocks of old buildings and streets dating back hundreds of years, specifically in Gamla stan, Sodermalm, Ostermalm, Kungsholmen and Vasastan. The city is also home to the Skogskyrkogården or “Woodland Cemetery”, a UNESCO World Heritage site that reflects on the development of architecture from Nordic Classicism to mature functionalism.
